who we are

welcome! we're so glad you found us!

"we" is definitely collective in this case. the compass cake community is made up of individual cake artists, pastry chefs and like minded creators who have a passion for making beautiful and delicious things.
we know that there is hurt in the world, and this wonderful group of people has come together to try and bring a little joy and love to hurting individuals.

how do we do this?
we are connected to a number of tremendous agencies (you can find them on our "who we serve" page) who are in the community on a daily basis doing a lot of hard work. our focus is women. women who have been at risk for any number of devestating situations from abuse, to homelessness to human trafficking.
we have a list of cake artists who let us know if they're available when a cake is needed.

why do we focus on women?
there are a ton of great organizations out there. and we realize that everyone (well most everyone) likes cake, but there is currently (none that we know of) any specific group that does this for women. there are many amazing agencies that provide this service for children and families with cancer, but they typically do not handle adult cases.
also, women, in our belief, should be shown extra love and pampering on their birthday.

your mission statement includes Bible verses - what does that mean?
the compass cake community was started by christina mckenzie, owner of the cocoa cakery, who loves Jesus. this whole outreach started because she felt that there was something more she could do with her business then just make cakes for paying customers. there was a calling to reach those who were hurting. she looked for some opportunties, and almost immediately they were much larger than she could handle herself. she needed a community of like-minded individuals to join in.
once the word went out about what the plan was, the cake artists came in droves.
no not everyone is a Christian, and we don't know which of our cake artists or clients are or aren't. that doesn't matter. we are called to serve, everyone and anyone. the compass cake community is about compassion and kindness in a troubled time.

what does the name mean?
many of the women we serve, at some point, lost their way. through any variety of circumstances they are now starting a new path, a new direction with purpose. a compass is something that directs you to a specific point. it brings you somewhere rather than wandering aimlessly. our desire is that these women continue on the path that was set out for them, one that leads to a prosperous and fulfilling life. that they would know joy rather than only a fleeing pleasure. that they would have purpose and compassion for those they meet on their own journey. it wasn't intentional, but rather fitting that compass is the first part of compassion.
